Family & Community
We have a vast range of services and programmes to meet the needs of individuals, families and the wider community. These include parenting courses, specialised family programmes, counselling services, children’s contact visit’s, individual and family meetings and supports, advocacy and liaison with other services. We also provide wider supports such as adult education, social groups and outlets and information supports.

Currently we are also looking for counsellors to provide counselling services with our organisation. If you have an interest in providing such service please fill in Expression of Interest Form.
Functional Family Therapy (FFT)
Functional Family Therapy is a well-established and nationally recognised, evidence-based family therapy intervention and prevention programme for at risk adolescents and their families. Contexts include child welfare, diversion, probation and other. For more information see www.functionalfamilytherapy.com.
Reasons for referrals to FFT can include:
- Behavioural difficulties at school and home
- Adolescent mental health issues including , depression, anxiety, ADHD, ODD, OCD
- Suicide ideation
- Self harm
- Anti-social behaviour
- Family relational difficulties
- Substance abuse
- Sexual abuse (victim and perpetrator)
- Breakdown in foster care placement
While the programme is designed for young people aged 11-18, their younger siblings also benefit from the therapy. FFT is a short-term therapy of approximately 16-22 sessions, with up to 26-30 sessions for more complex issues. It is a three phase approach. 1) Engagement and Motivation, 2) Behaviour Change, and 3) Generalisation and Supports.

Parents Plus Courses
Parents Plus is an evidenced based parenting programme which believes in empowering families we work with. Programmes are focused on encouraging children and parents to achieve their potential and build new skills. For more information see www.parentsplus.ie

Family Supports and Programmes
We offer a range of family supports, from individual family meeting and programmes to evidence based programmes such as ‘Strengthening families’ programme.
Parenting Supports are offered individually or through parenting programmes.
We can arrange contact visits for separated parents in our comfortable family room.

The Community Bank is a voluntary operated initiative which operates on Friday evenings at 6.30 pm in the Fr. McGrath Family Resource Centre. All are welcome to join this scheme, which was set up to encourage people in the community to savings and money management.
MAN (Men’s Action Network)
MAN was set up in 2009, launching its first Christmas Party hosted by the Fr. McGrath Family Resource Centre.
Men’s Action Network provides an opportunity to ALL men over 50 years of age living in Kilkenny city and beyond for:
- social contact
- games (skittles, bowls, boccia, curling and more)
- men’s health awareness talks
- day trips and holidays
- educational activities
- integration & participation in activities in wider community of Kilkenny
The activities of M.A.N are aimed to eradicate isolation, loneliness and social exclusion amongst men and to provide long term benefit for the community.
M.A.N meet on Fridays 10.30am – 12.30pm and Wednesdays 2.30 – 4.30pm in St. Canice’s Neighbourhood Centre), Butts Green, Kilkenny.

Informal Education / Support – CONNECT CAFE
Connect Cafe is the community initiative of Fr. McGrath Centre which was set up to provide an informal space for people from St. Canice’s Parish and beyond to come in for chat, cup of tea and get involved in some activities. The aim of Connect Café is to promote social inclusion, break the isolation in the community and encourage people to get involved in community projects. The group meets in the Neighbourhood Centre, Butts Green from Monday to Thursday (11-1pm) and focuses around various activities (see schedule below). In spring/summer season we also organise day trips for members of Connect Cafe.
We welcome ALL people regardless of age, sex, race, ability or social background.
CONNECT CAFE – CURRENT WEEKLY SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES
Monday 10.30 – 12.30 – Women’s Crafts (Card Making, embroidery, crocheting, knitting).
Tuesday 10.30 – 12.30 – Art – informal art classes for adults – painting, drawing, sketching led by a volunteer artist.
Wednesday – Music (live music and sing-along). Please note: due to lack of committed volunteers these sessions are temporarily not running.
Thursday 10.30 – 12.30 – Community art/crafts projects (mosaics, decoupage [furniture makeover]). Please note: during July and August 2014 these sessions will stop and resume again in September with new project.
Activities can vary from month to month. Participation in all above activities is FREE, we also provide all materials. Donations of materials, however, are welcome. We also ask participants to get involved in organising fundraising events once or twice a year.

Bingo – Tuesdays 8 – 10pm (Neighbourhood Centre, Butts Green)
Pongo – Wednesdays 8 – 10pm (Neighbourhood Centre, Butts Green). Pongo is running from September to June.
Music Awareness Group – Monday, Tuesday & Thursday, 7.30pm – 9.30pm (at Fr. McGrath Centre). To join please contact Tom Dullard, Tel: 086 – 8757674
Table Tennis – Mondays 7.30 – 9.30pm (Neighbourhood Centre, Butts Green). Table tennis is running from October to April.
Snooker – Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 7 – 11pm (Neighbourhood Centre, Butts Green)
Craft workshops – organised periodically various workshops for men and women from travelling community (woodwork, basket-making, batik and more). These workshops are subject to funding availability.
Trips/family events – organised periodically according to the needs/expressed interest
